City Physiology, founded by John Schaffer, M.A., C.S.C.S., is driven by a simple yet powerful purpose: to be the presence that he wished for when embracing fitness as a way of life. With nearly three decades of dedication to a ‘fitness lifestyle,’ John, at 47 years old, not only maintains his own physical condition but also thrives as a sought-after commercial, lifestyle, and fit model—a testament to his commitment.
His proudest achievement is graduating magna cum laude from Teachers College, Columbia University with a Master’s degree in Applied Exercise Physiology. Further enhancing his expertise, he has earned the distinctive title of Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) from the National Strength & Conditioning Association (NSCA).
“With formal backgrounds in exercise physiology, sports nutrition, and functional anatomy, I employ a multidisciplinary approach, helping clients improve their health and fitness. John changed my life. For two years he has brought really fun and unique workouts to each session, and has changed my perception of physical health and how to achieve my goals. I started seeing John to get stronger and more flexible, and am seeing gains in both daily. Bad dad jokes though so be aware.
At nearly 60 years old, with a hip replacement, I had just about given up on my physical health. I was overweight, drinking daily and eating whatever was convenient. One day, while having lunch with a friend, I commented on how great they looked. They credited John and recommended I reach out to him. Fast forward six months and I’m a different person. My family comment on how refreshed and energized I look. I’m doing things today that I never believed possible before meeting John.
I wanna take time out to thank John for changing me. I’ve gone through so much emotionally over the past year (including crying throughout an entire lifting session), and John has kept me motivated and been a friend and coach all in one. I love myself and my body so much now and it really takes effort and people to keep you accountable.
Currently, all City Physiology clients who book in-person sessions will be seen at Iconoclast Fitness, 210 5th Ave, Floor 5, New York, NY 10010. This private fitness center is conveniently located off the NW corner of Madison Square Park in Manhattan. Iconoclast is a boutique facility, unlike big box gyms, with limited occupancy. Only those working with a trainer may use the facility, it is not an open-member gym.
